I am a mixed-media Melbourne-based artist living in Elsternwick.
My works range from realist, semi abstract and abstract artworks on paper, board and canvas, and original prints on archival quality photographic rag paper. I studied Art & Design, majoring in printmaking (etching) at Victoria College (now Swinburne).
For many years I produced original art cards and works on paper sold through my online shop. My prints and works on paper are held in various state institutions and private collections around the world, including the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
Practically any artistic expression has influenced my technique and concepts including film, installation, soundscapes, music, photography, illustration, painting, printmaking, sculpture, architecture, collage and indigenous art. I love art in all its forms.
Coming primarily from a printmaking background, I’m interested in using line, colour and texture equally with imagery to elicit a contemplative mood in the viewer. I tend to have an interior view of the world, often drawing on dreamscapes and imaginings, even when depicting real landscapes.
In 2015 I was lucky enough to do an encaustic workshop at R&F Paints in upstate New York where my love for the medium was rekindled. Encaustic (beeswax and dammar varnish) is a soft-layered, luminous medium that can be used to great effect on a variety of surfaces and with other art media.
The workshop has inspired me to combine painterly effects with printmaking techniques, such as incised lines in wax similar to drypoint and the intaglio process. Oil stick over encaustic adds an extra dimension, especially for effects like surf and clouds. The technique can be unpredictable sometimes, but always rewarding.
I’m currently working on a series of ‘Elemental’ paintings that depict the awesome aspect of nature in its overpowering fierceness as well as its contemplative mystery. Nature allows us to experience something greater than ourselves and puts our ego in perspective. Not a bad thing, especially now as we hold the Earth in critical balance.
